Promises, Promises Cast Preparing for November Opening

Director Bill Haley and Music Director Marcia Gallagher are pleased to introduce the cast of the last production of the Gaslight season, Promises, Promises.

Chuck Baxter (Jason Laptewicz), a very junior member of a 1960s insurance firm, lives in a modest bachelor apartment. He has fallen for Fran (Mel Bills), a young woman working in the company cafeteria. Chuck's life takes a turn for the worse when four senior members of his firm (Richard Bostwick, Miles Chung, Jim Dowling and Shawn Roy) discover that he has an apartment, and pressure him into letting them use it to dally with their lady friends.

Chuck agrees, in return for "promises, promises" of advancement in the company. When the head of personnel, Mr. Sheldrake (Mike Gilbert), finds out about the arrangement, Chuck thinks his career is over. But instead, Mr. Sheldrake wants to use Chuck's apartment for himself. In the meantime, a doctor living across the hall (Dan Crocker) sees all the women coming in and out, assumes Chuck is a swinging single -- and thinks less of him for it.

At the office Christmas Party, Miss Olsen (Rebecca Singer) lets Fran know that she is not the first fling for Mr. Sheldrake, and that she and other women in the firm (Abby Crocker, Wendy Gilman) have been there too.

When Chuck discovers that Fran is the girl Mr. Sheldrake has been seeing in his apartment, he drowns his sorrows at a bar, and picks up another woman, Marge (Lynette Miller). When he takes Marge to his apartment, he discovers Fran passed out from an overdose of sleeping pills. With the help of the Doctor, Fran is saved. Fran's grandfather (Walter Guild) arrives to rescue her, and the tangled webs of lies and promises begins to be untangled.

Promises, Promises has a book by Neil Simon, based on the screenplay "The Apartment" by Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond. Music is by Burt Bacharach with lyrics by Hal David. Popular songs include "What Do You Get When You Fall in Love" and the title number.
